Give Life: The Transplant Journey was made
possible by a grant
from the Health Resources Services Administration's Division
of Transplantation (DoT), under a three-year program seeking ways
to increase donation. The grant program is part of the National Organ
and Tissue Donation Initiative launched in 1997 by Vice President Al Gore
and Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala.
The Journey is part of a three-year project
"Measuring the
Effectiveness of a Multimedia Internet-Based Approach to
Increasing Donor Registry Participation." It grew from an earlier
Journey created in 1997. Also part of the National Initiative,
it explained the transplant process and was supported by a DoT seed grant.
Funding for the current project was announced by Vice President Gore in
September 1999 (HHS
press release,

We are grateful to the DoT for this opportunity to create a new intervention
and especially thank Lynn Rothberg Wegman, Director of the Division of
Transplantation, and Mary Ganikos, PhD, Chief of Public and Professional
Education, for their support and encouragement.
