People currently on HD have  been on it an average of 4  years; maximum unknown.  People currently on PD have  been on it an average of 3  1/2 years; maximum  unknown.  Maximum unknown;  survival at 5 years is 80%  Maximum unknown;  survival at 5 years is 90%
 Muscle cramps and a sudden  drop in blood pressure;  clotting at the access site;  infection; at risk for  depression. Will also  continue to have some  effects of kidney failure.  Risks of general anesthetic in  catheter placement surgery;  peritonitis; other infections;  anemia; neurologic  problems; and depression.  Also will continue to have  some of the effects of kidney  failure.  Risks of major surgery and  general anesthesia,  rejection; side effects of  medications include  increased risk of infection,  slightly increased risk of  cancer.  Risks of major surgery and  general anesthesia,  rejection; side effects of  medications include  increased risk of infection,  slightly increased risk of  cancer.
