Sometimes people feel uncomfortable accepting someone's offer of a kidney, let alone asking someone to donate. Most
often it's due to worry about the donor's surgery and long-term health, and about
the donor's putting himself or herself at risk. Such concern is natural and understand-
able. But it's also important to look at the facts and consider the donor's point of view.

Yes, there are risks
The risk of serious complications is 1%; the risk of death is 0.028%.

But remember: no one is allowed to donate unless the transplant team thinks it's safe for them, both now and
in the long run.
Over 58,000 people have donated kidneys
in the U.S. Longterm studies have found that years later, kidney donors are just as healthy
as the general population, and have the same life expectancy. Although these donors have pain, it is managed with medications, and is gone soon.
