Like hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis helps clean
the blood and balance fluids.
To start, you have surgery to put an access tube in your abdomen. Several
times every day, you use that tube to partially fill your abdom-inal cavity
with dialysis solution, which draws wastes and extra water from the blood
and is drained out later. You are responsible for your supplies, watching
for infection, staying in contact with the dialysis nurse, and restricting
your diet.
The most serious risk of PD is peritonitis, a painful and potentially serious infection
that strikes 3 out of 10 patients annually. Other risks include anemia,
neurologic problems, and depression.
Just like hemodialysis, PD is only 10% as effective as a healthy kidney.
Also, it can't do all the jobs a healthy kidney does, like making the
hormone that tells your bones to make more red blood cells. It is not
a cure for kidney disease.
